It was a very big thing for my mother to move into the home, after being very independent in her own home, but after a few blips, she has settled in very well and seems to be quite happy and content. The values and contributions from the families is fully recognised and supported. As with hotels, the cost of living in a care home varies widely according to its location, the size of your room or suite, and the facilities on offer. There is often a substantial difference between fees charged to those who can afford the costs themselves and those who receive help from their Local Authority. A majority of homes aim to cater for both, but some target only one or the other. If you have a home to sell, you may be able to use the proceeds to pay the deposit on a new property and take out a ‘lifetime mortgage’ to cover the rest of the cost.

Just be aware that we do not provide housing or care services ourselves, so we cannot accept applications for housing and do not have any control over the services listed on our site. Housing-with-care is a recent but natural evolution of retirement housing to provide an environment capable of enabling older people to maintain their independence even if they become physically or mentally frail. I cannot praise the staff at Abbeywood enough for the care they give to my mother. Whenever I visit there is always some sort of activity taking place and all the residents are enjoying themselves.
Some care homes are registered to provide personal care only, for example help with washing, dressing and giving medication. Others also provide nursing, and will have a nurse on duty twenty-four hours a day. Care services offered to people in housing-with-care facilities are regulated, subject to periodic inspections and awarded grades. Guidance for providers
Bedrooms are lovely and furnished public rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and cared for. My grandma has lived here for over four years now and we have been very happy with the care she has received. The staff are friendly and helpful, always seem to be busy with the residents, the home is clean and always tidy and the updated decor is looking fab. I would also like to say my grandma has seemed comfortable with her surroundings since she first arrived and always says how nice the home and staff are.

If you simply want to move to a more suitable non-retirement home, and need help or advice with this, our EAC Advice service is here to help you. My mother is well looked after and I have no problem leaving her in the capable hands of the carers. They are really quick to spot any difference in health or behaviour and get the doctor in straight away. Getting older can make it more difficult to get around and do the things you used to do, or would like to do. On occasion, it will be necessary, for the benefit of the resident or others to share information with either other professionals or organisations.
For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them. – the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve. Our infection prevention and control inspections look at how well people using a service are kept safe from the spread of infections.
To ensure each residents right to personal choice is maintained especially in relation to clothes, diet, activities and medical needs. To maintain each residents right to have their political, religious and emotional needs accepted and respected. Services are aimed at maximising the individual’s capacity for self-care and mobility. If this service has not had a CQC inspection since it registered with us, our judgement may be based on our assessment of declarations and evidence supplied by the service. The staff will always have a chat to me and let me know how mum is doing and if there are any problems. EAC Advice is a free, specialist and independent telephone advice service provide by the charity Elderly Accommodation Counsel . With a few exceptions, accommodation in a care home cannot be bought or rented like retirement housing. Think of them more like full-board hotel accommodation with 24 hour care available.

Most retirement developments offer either properties for sale or for rent, but newer ones may offer both tenure options, and possibly shared ownership too. Buying a ‘home for life plan’, or ‘lifetime lease’, gives you the right to live in a property until you die or move to a care home. This might enable you to live somewhere you couldn’t otherwise afford. A move may provide a whole new lease of life, but a wrong choice can be difficult to undo.
